Stop the new year cards. Keep the old friends.

Trade the once-a-year update for somewhere to leave it.

After you write “this is my last card,” something nags.

Ending a new year card is not ending the friendship. Still, for some people that card was the only line left. You have their address and nothing else. Nothing worth a phone call either. A few faces come to mind.

What takes its place

Just leave your news somewhere.

WA is a small engawa — a porch — shared with up to five old friends. A photo and a line, left there quietly. No notifications, no replies needed. They open it when you cross their mind, and see that you are doing fine. It is what the card already did. Only the frequency changes.

What changes.

Once a year
Any day you feel like it
It only arrives if you write it
It waits until they look
You need their address
You hand over one invite code
If you add a line

On how to say it.

The only thing that matters is that the other person does not read it as being cut off. Keep the part about stopping short. Add one line saying the friendship continues. That is enough.

Just say you are stopping

This will be my last new year card. I hope we stay in touch all the same.

Add a short reason

I am slowly changing how I keep in touch, so this is my last card. I wish you a good year.

Say where to find you

This is my last new year card, but I will be leaving my news here. Drop by whenever you think of it.

This page is for anyone looking for somewhere to put the “here” in that third line. Your invite code appears once you create an engawa in the app.
